February 8th, Exodus 19-21: Laws and Commandments

Exodus 19-20 details Moses going up Mount Sinai to receive the commandments. Exodus 21 begins the list of laws for the Israelites that they are to live by. I don’t have time to go over each one, but each law represents God’s justice and mercy.

On a historical note, the verses about slavery from Exodus 21 were used to justify slavery in the American South during the antebellum period. For example, Exodus 21:3-4 says, “3 If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.”

That just goes to show you how much we are willing to twist God’s Word for our own ends.
