January 10th, Job 19-21: Job’s rebuttals #5 and 6, Zophar responds

When you argue something long enough, you get tired of arguing. And when you get tired, you may get lazy and resort to ad hominem attacks rather than actual points.

Job questions how long his friends are going to question him. He’s tired of hearing their “wisdom”, accusing them of leaving him out to dry just as God has.

Zophar’s reply again acknowledges the dishonor that Job’s rebuttal brings. But again, Zophar doesn’t back down from insisting that God will destroy the wicked man in due time.

Then, Job breaks down a bit here. He wonders what good God’s justice for the wicked man is if God punishes his sons rather than the wicked man himself.

Job 21:19-21 says:
19 It is said, ‘God stores up the punishment of the wicked for their children.’
Let him repay the wicked, so that they themselves will experience it!
20 Let their own eyes see their destruction;
let them drink the cup of the wrath of the Almighty.
21 For what do they care about the families they leave behind
when their allotted months come to an end?

Job considers his friends arguments falsehood as long as wicked man profit in their current times. Their talk of God punishing the wicked is nonsense.

Questions: Have you ever questioned God’s justice? Have you ever wondered why the wicked profit so much in today’s world?
